Celebrations Reflection
This unit focused on celebrations. The first studio was creating finger puppets using cloud clay and other various materials. We were supposed to make a puppet that in some way embodied ourselves. I created a peacock because they are bright and colorful. The second studio was based on Norman Rockwell’s work. We were supposed to create a magazine cover that celebrated something. I decided to celebrate America’s pastime, specifically Cardinal baseball. The third artist we discussed was Miriam Schapiro. She was a feminist collage artist.
I think these are all projects that could be introduced in a classroom. I envision myself using the first studio to see how students view themselves. Literacy could be integrated by having the students get in groups to create plays with their puppets. The Consortium of National Arts Education Associations (2002) states that “valid interdisciplinary work can take many forms, including a single lesson that features connections between two or more disciplines” (p. 6).The second studio would be a way of learning what students think needs to be celebrated in everyday life. It also incorporates literacy because the magazine cover requires text. This could be taken further by asking students to write an article that could go in the magazine.
